Press annual fall sports special

section coming Thursday

Local high school and North Idaho College teams will be profiled in the Press annual fall sports special section, scheduled to be inserted in Thursday's newspaper.

Local high school football, volleyball, soccer, cross country and swimming teams, as well as NIC volleyball and soccer teams, will be included.

Former NIC player named

Timberline softball coach

BOISE - Kristen Burtch, who helped the North Idaho College softball team finish second in the nation in 2007, has been named softball coach at Timberline High, her alma mater.

Burtch was a first-team all-Scenic West Athletic Conference pick in both her seasons at NIC. As a freshman, she set NIC records for doubles (18) and fielding percentage (.994) on the Cardinals' national runner-up team.

Burtch, who helped Timberline win its first state softball title in 2005, replaces David Goodwin, who resigned after three seasons as head coach.

Ex-Lake City volleyball player now volunteer assistant at GU

SPOKANE - Renee (Bordelon) Lovell, who played at Lake City High, North Idaho College and Washington State, is joining the Gonzaga volleyball staff as a volunteer assistant, Bulldogs coach Dave Gantt said.

"We are very fortunate to be in a position to take on a full-time volunteer assistant," Gantt said. "This is the first time in the history of the program we have been able to do this. In addition, we now have someone who played the setting position at a high level during her career. We will now have more focused attention on the setting position during practice."

In 2009, as a senior at WSU, she helped the Cougars advance to the NCAA tournament. She was honored that season by her coaches with the "Coug" award, which honors a player who demonstrates dedication, hard work and attitude.

As a freshman at NIC, she helped the Cardinals to a fourth-place finish at the NJCAA tournament.

"I like adding Renee from the perspective that her approach is very informational, and she is very even-keeled," Gantt said. "Renee is a very welcome addition to the staff while she works on her masters in organizational leadership on campus this year."

Pfeifer resigns as hoops

assistant at Montana State

BOZEMAN, Mont. - George Pfeifer, former St. Maries resident and former Idaho coach, has resigned as an assistant men's basketball coach at Montana State.

The coaching veteran opted to move to Spokane with his wife.

"My wife just took a new job in Spokane," Pfeifer told msubobcats.com. "We've been doing the long-distance relationship (between Billings and Bozeman), but to be seven hours apart just wouldn't work. We just celebrated our 30th (wedding) anniversary last week, and she's been following me around all these years. It's time for us to switch roles."

Golf scramble to benefit

adult baseball teams

There will be a four-person golf scramble on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. at Prairie Falls Golf Club in Post Falls.

Cost is $65 per player, and proceeds benefit the Coeur d'Alene BlackSox fall baseball team and the Iron Pigs summer team.

A drawing for a Callaway 3-hybrid men's club and a 50/50 drawing will be held.
