SPIRIT LAKE - Jordan Ward scored three goals, two in the second half, as the Lakeland Hawks beat the Timberlake Tigers 6-3 in the season opening girls soccer match for both schools on Friday night at Van Tunstra Memorial Field.

"We started really slow and basically we gave up some opportunites we normally don't," Lakeland coach Mario Maddy said. "We came back at the end of the first half and start to possess the ball and created chances to score."

Ida Jannson scored two goals for Timberlake, which hosts Kellogg on Tuesday.

"After scoring the first two goals, we just never held them," Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. "It wasn't long before they figured out how to play us, but it was a great game to introduce them to how we play soccer."
