WEALTHY: Door is open to all

Mr. Windham in a recent letter said the wealthy should pay their fair share. I think we all agree.

He states the wealthy should “...shoulder the tax burden they have in the past....” Apparently he believes the wealthy should get a tax cut! Currently the top 1% of taxpayers according to the Congressional Budget Office pay 38.7% of all income taxes. When the tax rate was 70% in the recent past the top 1% paid 18%. It is also germane that the almost half of the population pays no income tax at all.

It’s also important to note that President John Kennedy (who could buy Mitt Romney out of the petty cash fund from his inherited wealth) lowered the top tax rate more than any president in history. That reduction in taxes resulted in INCREASED tax revenue (taxes are an economic issue, not a political one).

Seems to me the “wealthy” already pay their fair share of taxes and then some. It’s a shame that the Democrats are trying to create class warfare, especially since the issue they try to make is provably bogus.

By the way, I am not one of the 1% folks like Al Gore, Nancy Pelosi and John Kerry (who bought and registers his yacht in another state to avoid Massachusetts taxes), but am glad I live in a country where we all have the opportunity to get there.
