Fundraiser to help family with medical costs
SPIRIT LAKE - A fundraiser to help a family pay medical expenses following the death of their son is scheduled Aug. 25.
"Rock on with A. J." is being put on by friends of the family of 16-year-old August J. "A.J." Marksworth, who drowned last month Spirit Lake.
It is scheduled 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Spirit Lake Park and will include an auction, music, food and games.
Organizer Paula Flodquist many businesses have contributed to the fundraiser. Already, about $7,000 has been donated.
Marksworth and friend Nathan T. Thiers, 15, Spirit Lake, were at the mill pond area at the north end of Spirit Lake on July 11 when they decided to wade across the pond, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department. While most of the area is 4 to 5 feet deep, Marksworth stepped into an area that was about 8 feet deep and slipped under water.
Despite Thiers' efforts to save him, Marksworth drowned. He was pulled from the water by a Kootenai County Sheriff's deputy, and was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane via a MedStar helicopter.
Flodquist said the helicopter and medical treatment to try and save Marksworth totaled around $17,000. Friends are rallying to help the family with the expenses.
Donations are being accepted.
