Tale of the Tails

HAYDEN - The Kootenai Humane Society has more than 100 cats in cages, and more than 50 dogs in kennels at its building at the end of Ramsey Road.

Feeding, caring and finding homes for all those animals costs plenty. That's why Tails at Twilight is critical to the nonprofit's operations.

The goal is $100,000 to help the no-kill shelter carry out its mission of "saving lives and improving quality of life for all the animals in need at KHS."

"This is our biggest fundraiser of the year," said KHS director Dori Peck. "This is a huge opportunity for us to raise much-needed funds."

Already, more than 300 tickets have been sold - but plenty more are available for the event scheduled 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at The Golf Club at Black Rock.

It will include auctions, music, beverages and hors d'oeuvres. There will also be a parade of dogs and cats available for adoption.

Tickets are $75, or two for $125.

Peck, KHS director since April, said it's "kitten season," so the shelter has around 110 cats and kittens that need homes. Fifty-one dogs also need owners.

"We're full," said Peck, who previously worked at the Spokane Humane Society as development and outreach director.

It costs $85 to adopt a dog, $25 for an adult cat, and $50 for kittens. All animals are spayed or neutered, microchipped and have had their vaccinations.

In years past, Tails at Twilight has raised around $70,000 to benefit KHS animals and programs. Peck believes they could top that, especially since this is the first time Black Rock has opened it doors for an event like this.

"It's a unique opportunity to come out and see it," she said of the club about 15 miles south of Coeur d'Alene off U.S. 95 on Rockford Bay Road.

KHS depends entirely on grants, fundraisers, income from adoptions, its thrift stores and donations.

For tickets, call Pete Chichester, 819-3034. They will also be available at the door.
