Cd'A residents report strange afternoon noise

Coeur d'Alene residents were shaken on Wednesday, at roughly 4 p.m., after hearing a loud and strange noise from above.

"It sounded like a huge, huge machine right above our heads," said Barbara Hensley, adding that she had been standing on Wilbur Avenue at the time, near PetCo. "It's so bizarre. We had heard airplanes before from the Coeur d'Alene airport, but that wasn't it at all."

Although she wasn't in a position where she could scan the sky, the sound lasted about two minutes, she said.

"The sound was crazy," Hensley said. "It started going away, then reverberated back again."

Mary Simons said she was inside her home on the east end of Coeur d'Alene when she heard something approaching overhead.

It sounded fast and loud, like a "very big plane entirely too low," she said.

"I could hear it coming, I knew it was unusual. It came right over my house," she said. "I didn't know if somebody was in trouble or what it was. I thought it was a very huge plane that was about to crash."

Coeur d'Alene Police couldn't be reached late Wednesday afternoon.
