• SWIMMING
The Coeur d’Alene Area Swim Team sent 59 swimmers to the Witter Aquatic Complex July 27-29 and placed second overall and won the spirit award for the third consecutive year.
A number of CAST’s older swimmers were in Gresham, Ore., at senior sectionals, but competed against the best throughout Oregon, Washington and Idaho.
High point winners were Sarah Gonzales (8) and Cole Curtis (12), who swam in 18 events over three days and outscored all other swimmers in their respective age groups.
Outstanding swims came from many team members, but of special note were CAST’s 11-12 year old boys; Marcus Rozier, Gabe Markowski, Jon Archer and Curtis. While Curtis came away with high point in this group, his major competition for this award came from the other three boys on his team. Jon Archer was second in the high point, Gabe Markowski was third, and Marcus was fifth. These four also combined for first place in both their relay races; the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay.
Gonzales and Rosemarie Loftus were 1-2, respectively, in the high point scoring for 8-and-under swimmers. Gonzales has been on the team six months, but has turned in an amazing series of swims, led by a first-place finish in the 50 breast. Gonzales also set two team records, one in the 50 breast and the other in the 100 backstroke. Loftus finished with a first-place finish in the 50 butterfly and second place in the 100 meter freestyle.
Other first-place finishes were: Curtis 50 fly, 100 fly, 100 free, 200 IM; Archer 400 free, 200 free, 50 back and 100 back and Ben Lovell (18) 100 free and 100 fly.
• SOCCER
Two Idaho Thunder U-14 players guest-played with Valley Thunder of Lewiston this past weekend at the Oswego Nike Cup in Portland.
Emily Parson, normally Idaho Thunder’s goalie, played the midfield position the whole tournament. Playing out of her normal position, she still stepped up and assisted on a goal in the first game, helping lift the team to their 2-0 win over Oregon City Fury.
Cierra Foster, who normally plays forward with Idaho Thunder, played defense the whole tournament — again out of her normal position, but still played well, also assisting on a goal in the semifinals to help the game end in a 4-0 win over LOSC SOL. The final game was against Kent United (Wash.) — Valley Thunder won the championship game 1-0.
• MARTIAL ARTS
Iron Lion Jiu-Jitsu Academy of Dalton Gardens all but swept the competition at the 2012 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Kids World Championships held last weekend in San Bernardino, Calif.
On July 20, 13 competitors took on the best in the world. The two-day, single-elimination tournament had teams from the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, New Zealand, Guam and others. Iron Lion brought home 17 gold medals, six silver and two bronze medals and finished in the top 10 as a team in both the Gi and No Gi divisions, despite going head to head with teams consisting of over 100 competitors.
