How to get the most out of your child's therapy
Oftentimes, parents bring their child to therapy for behavioral, attentional, or mood-related issues, with hopes that a few sessions talking with a therapist will "cure" the child.
Sometimes, what we fail to see is that to help a child sustain long-lasting improvements in their moods or behaviors, it not only takes addressing and treating the child's issues, but also involves modification of the child's environment. This requires the commitment, motivation and readiness of the parent to support their child and for them as well to engage in the process.
Engaging in the process might include: attending therapy sessions with their child, attending sessions with the therapist without the child present to learn techniques to assist their child to practice what they are learning in therapy, or attending groups with other parents to learn new techniques/strategies and to network with others. Parental engagement in the process of therapeutic treatment of their child promotes quicker, more long-lasting desired effects and increases harmony within the home.
