PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Vikings sweep Bengals, clinch No. 2 seed to regionals

| April 29, 2012 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - Elli Tindall scored the game-winning run on a passed ball with one out in the seventh inning of the first game, and the Coeur d'Alene Vikings went on to sweep the Lewiston Bengals 2-1 and 6-4 in 5A Inland Empire League softball Saturday at Larry Schwenke Field.

With the sweep, Coeur d'Alene (16-4, 6-4 5A IEL) clinched the No. 2 seed to regionals and will play No. 3 Lewiston (14-8, 5-7) in the opening round on May 8. Top-seeded Lake City will host Post Falls in the other semifinal game.

Lewiston scored an unearned run in the first game as Coeur d'Alene committed three errors in the top of the first inning.

Lindsie Scholwinski had two hits and struck out five for Coeur d'Alene in the first game.

"She pitched a really good game," Coeur d'Alene coach Larry Bieber said. "She kept them off balance all day and had a great all-around game. Lewiston's a good offensive team, but to hold them to one unearned run and two hits - that's a good day."

In the second game, Nikki Ragsdale drove in two runs and struck out six for Coeur d'Alene, which hosts Post Falls on Tuesday.

MOSCOW - Jacey Lawson had two doubles among her four hits, and Kayanna Quigley, Melissa McGlashan and Maggie Kirscher each tallied four hits, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs lost both ends of a 4A Inland Empire League doubleheader to the Bears.

Casey Bottomley was solid on the mound for Sandpoint (3-13, 0-8 4A IEL) in the first game, striking out six and going the distance. Breanna Buchmiller drove in two runs and Quigley scored twice, but Sandpoint wasn't able to hold a 6-5 lead in the seventh inning.

"Casey pitched a great game to keep us in it. She battled, and grew a lot today," Sandpoint coach Derek Dickinson said. "It was back and forth, and they had the last at-bat and that's what it came down to."

Lawson scored twice, McGlashan had two runs and two RBIs, and Kirscher hit a two-run double as the Bulldogs posted two five-run innings and finished with 16 hits in the nightcap, but Moscow (5-3 4A IEL) banged out 18 hits to win the wild shootout.

"It resembled a bit of a slowpitch score, with both teams going at it and swinging the bats," Dickinson said. "We were matching them run for run, and had a rally in the seventh inning and almost pulled it out."
