PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Valente fuels Post Falls sweep

| April 29, 2012 9:00 PM

POST FALLS - Senior Taylor Valente went 7 for 8 with five runs scored for the Post Falls Trojans as they swept the Lake City Timberwolves 16-12 and 10-5 in a 5A Inland Empire League baseball doubleheader on Saturday.

Post Falls (9-8, 5-6 5A IEL) can clinch the second seed to the 5A Region 1 tournament with a Lake City (5-10, 2-7) doubleheader split against Lewiston (7-11, 3-7) on Tuesday or a Trojans win at Coeur d'Alene on Monday.

If Lewiston wins twice, the Bengals will be the No. 2 seed, moving Post Falls to third and Lake City to fourth. Lake City concludes the regular season at Coeur d'Alene on Thursday.

In the first game, Zack Reeder and Ryan Hunt hit two-run doubles in the first inning for Post Falls.

Mitch Bevacqua hit a three-run double to the left field wall to tie the game at 10.

"It was a big day for us," Post Falls coach Dustin Frank said. "We didn't play the best baseball in the world, but our bats picked us up today. We played well as a team and we're starting to come together."

Sam Schultz hit a two-run single in the second inning of the second game for Lake City.

"It's fun to play them," said Frank of Lake City. "Coach (Al) Bevacqua does a good job with them. They bounced right back (after trailing 9-0 in the first game). It's cool to see teams do that and have some pride and step up."
