If I were principal for a day ...

COEUR d'ALENE - Holy Family Catholic School offers a special item at its annual auction - that item gives one student reign over the school for a day.

The lucky student gets to set policy, such as dress code, lunch menu, teacher curriculum and if they so choose even make the day a philanthropic day - which is what Holy Family Catholic School third-grader, and Principal for the Day, Molly Whelan did.

Molly held several meetings with Principal Karen Durgin to change the dress code from uniform to comfortable clothes, curriculum to no homework and math must be taught in a fun and entertaining way.

One middle school teacher, Kathy Sells, tried to teach math without a fun flair, to which Molly had to discipline her for not following the rules.

When Durgin asked Molly about having to disciplining a teacher she said "it was the highlight of my day."

Then in an effort to teach her classmates to become philanthropists, she challenged the students of HFCS to think beyond themselves, and raise money to purchase a goat for those in Haiti.

Molly asked the students to do extra chores at home to earn money in hopes the school community could come together to buy one goat, which is more than $100.

"Molly inspired the school community so much, they raised enough funds to purchase three goats," according to a press release.

She also personally handed out Jamba Juice for all the staff members to start their day. At lunch she then gave them each a rose and said "thank you for all you do."
