RATHDRUM - A 20-year-old Rathdrum man was arrested late Friday night on charges of attempted strangulation and drug trafficking.

Daniel C. Matthews allegedly attempted to strangle his ex-girlfriend at 73-5 W. Wright St.

He had previously been arrested by Idaho State Police for DUI and was in jail when officers questioned him about the alleged domestic violence incident and a marijuana growing operation.

Neva S. Schafer, 22, Rathdrum, Matthews' ex-girlfriend, was arrested at the home for possession of marijuana of more than 3 ounces.

An ISP officer contacted Rathdrum police about the alleged battery.

When officers responded to the residence to speak with Schafer about the allegation, they discovered a marijuana-growing operation in the basement.

Officers found about 10 potted marijuana plants, several dozen drying marijuana leaves, a room for drying and harvesting marijuana and several other items associated with growing marijuana.
