Mather gets walkoff hit for Cubs

Joe Mather, who was born in Sandpoint and grew up in Coeur d'Alene, hit a two-run single with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Chicago Cubs to a 3-2 comeback win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night.

St. Louis closer Jason Motte had the Cubs down to their final strike when Mather, a former Cardinal, grounded a 2-2 slider up the middle, scoring Bryan LaHair and Geovany Soto.

"It just feels good," Mather said. "The whole atmosphere in the stadium and in the clubhouse, in the dugout, everybody was just excited."

Giants 6-7, Mets 1-2: Tim Lincecum posted his first win of the season and visiting San Francisco beat New York in the first game of a doubleheader.

In the nightcap, Pablo Sandoval homered to help the Giants to a doubleheader sweep.

Brewers 6, Astros 5: Ryan Braun had homer and three hits as host Milwaukee slipped past Houston.

Diamondbacks 9, Phillies 5: At Phoenix, Justin Upton burst out of a slow start to the season with two RBIs, including his first home run, and Arizona pounded Philadelphia.

Dodgers 7, Braves 2: Juan Uribe went 4 for 4 with Three RBIs to lead host Los Angeles past Atlanta.

Colorado at Pittsburgh, ppd., rain: The visiting Rockies' game with the Pirates was postponed and will be made up on Wednesday as part of a doubleheader.

• AMERICAN LEAGUE

Yankees 7, Rangers 4: At Arlington, Texas, Derek Holland gave up seven runs over six innings and host Texas fell to New York.

Blue Jays 4, Royals 1: Jose Bautista hit a two-run homer to lead Toronto at Kansas City.

Red Sox 6, Twins 5: At Minneapolis, Cody Ross homered twice to help Boston beat Minnesota.

White Sox 4, Athletics 0: Jake Peavy pitched a three-hitter to help Chicago beat Oakland.
