PREP BASEBALL: Kellogg rallies in opener, Spartans romp for split

| April 15, 2012 9:00 PM

KELLOGG - Freshman Tucker Figueroa singled to score James Red with nobody out in the seventh inning to give the Kellogg Wildcats a 10-9 win over the Priest River Spartans in the first game of an Intermountain League doubleheader Saturday at Teeters Field.

Priest River won the second 11-0.

"Our freshmen stepped up and carried us," Kellogg coach Scott Ross said. "James came in and shut the door on the mound and we came from behind with seven runs in the sixth. With the way the season has gone, it was a real positive to have the kids battle back."

In the second game, Priest River pitcher R.C. Akre held the Wildcats to three hits and the Spartans took advantage of 10 walks by Kellogg pitching.

Cameron Riley had two hits, including a triple in the second game for Priest River (2-4, 2-2 IML), which travels to St. Maries on Tuesday.

Kellogg (1-5, 1-4) hosts the Lakeland junior varsity on Monday.

Moscow 16-9

Sandpoint 3-3

SANDPOINT - Senior Ryan Schwartz registered a quality start for Sandpoint, but it wasn't enough as Moscow posted a big inning in both games of a 4A Inland Empire League sweep at Pine St. Field.

Schwartz kept the Bulldogs (1-3, 0-3 4A IEL) in the game in the nightcap, striking out eight in six-plus innings. Sandpoint trailed 4-3 heading into the final inning, before the Bears (3-4, 3-1 4A IEL) broke the game open with a five-run seventh. Bulldogs coach Chris Young's team just recently began practicing outside, and is still rounding into mid-season form after three straight league losses.

"We're still catching up with our pitching right now," said Young, lauding the performance of Schwartz. "Ryan pitched phenomenal in the second game. I couldn't ask for anything more."

Caleb Nishimoto and Justin Orr had the only two hits for Sandpoint in the second game.

Nishimoto was sharp on the mound early in the first game, and Jackson Olin had a stolen base and scored a run as the Bulldogs built a 3-2 lead after three innings. But things turned south in a hurry for the Bulldogs.

Led by the hot bat of Hunter Redinger, who had a home run and double among his four hits, the Bears blew the game open with nine runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth, ending the game after five innings.

Sandpoint will rest today before a doubleheader Monday at Post Falls.

"It took a while for our bats to get going," Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. "We've been hitting well in practice, but haven't done it in a game. We opened them up in the fourth. Everyone was hitting the ball up and down the lineup. Hopefully we can keep that going against Coeur d'Alene on Monday."
