PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Page, Tonkin fuel Timberlake sweep

| April 8, 2012 9:00 PM

SPIRIT LAKE - J.D. Page went 3 for 3 with six RBIs in the opener, and also struck out nine in a three-hitter as the Timberlake Tigers swept the visiting Kellogg Wildcats 16-1 and 10-0 in Intermountain League play Saturday.

Page hit a two-run double in the first inning and a two-run single in the third for Timberlake (6-0, 3-0 IML). Austin Allen went 3 for 3 with two RBIs for the Tigers.

In the second game, sophomore Hunter Tonkin pitched a five-hit shutout.

"He was just very effective; I think he threw just 60 pitches," Timberlake coach Bill Rider said. "He does a good job keeping them off balance."

Casey Rogstad hit a two-run single in the first inning for Timberlake. The Tigers had just three hits; Kellogg pitchers walked eight and hit three.

Timberlake is home vs. Priest River on Tuesday.

With the second game tied at 3 in the 10th inning, Moscow scored the eventual winning run after a throwing error on a dropped third strike allowed a runner to score from second.

"It was a weird deal," Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. "The kid struck out but it got past our catcher and the batter started walking back to the dugout and our catcher threw it into right field. That's our fault because he thought he was running when he actually had all the time in the world."

Lakeland (4-3, 1-1 4A IEL) had the bases loaded in the seventh and eighth inning, but were unable to push the winning run across.

Lakeland travels to Lake City on Tuesday.
