A Lake City High School senior's essay on the topic of private property took second place in a national competition sponsored by the nonprofit Bill of Rights Institute.

Jordan Finney won a $500 prize for her written answer to the question, "How does the Constitution establish and maintain a culture of liberty?"

Finney competed against other young essayists from the Western region which includes Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington as well as Guam, American Samoa and American Armed Forces Schools Abroad.

This year marked the institute's sixth annual Being an American Essay Contest.

The mission of the Washington, D.C.-based Bill of Rights Institute is "to educate young people about the words and ideas of America's Founders, the liberties guaranteed in America's Founding documents, and how the Founding principles continue to affect and shape a free society."
