Good deed of the day

| April 4, 2012 12:21 PM

Social work students at Lewis-Clark State College recently collected 2,500 diapers from local residents, and on Wednesday, they delivered them to St. Vincent de Paul in Coeur d’Alene and the Post Falls Food Bank.

“Diapers are a necessity,” said LCSC senior Sara Heise, pictured. “Food banks will give out between two and five diapers to a family, but that might last just one day. I have to thank the community for stepping up.”

Jeff Conroy, executive director of St. Vincent de Paul in Coeur d’Alene, praised the students’ efforts.

“It’s a huge expense to the families and anytime the community is able to help them by providing diapers; it’s a huge benefit,” Conroy said. ‘It’s nice to see college students taking the time to give back to community.”

Sherry Wallis, executive director of the Post Falls Food Bank, said young moms and grandparents raising children typically are the recipients of the diapers.

“It’s a huge gift,” Wallis said. “People who don’t have infants don’t think about how extremely expensive diapers can be for people. They have limited funds and they’re making hard choices on what to buy. These diapers will help.”
