Mayor bags bag issue

| September 24, 2011 9:00 PM

MOSES LAKE - Moses Lake Mayor Jon Lane has put an end to the idea of banning or limiting the use of plastic grocery bags in the city, at least for the foreseeable future.

"I don't want to speak for the whole council but that's not really a topic we particularly want to talk about," Lane said last week.

The issue was first raised during a council meeting last month, when Councilman David Curnel brought up a letter to council in which a citizen proposed such an action.

"When you look at what plastic bags do to the environment, I think it's a good idea," Councilman David Curnel said at the time. "I really think it's something we should consider as a city council."

But last week Curnel remained silent on the issue, which Lane said has "gone viral" even though it was never seriously considered.

"We get these letters on different topics on occasion and Dr. Curnel wasn't really being an advocate for it, he just thought that was something we needed to talk about," Lane said. "It's good for us as council members to bring up a topic even just to kind of get it on the radar, even if its not something we're really considering adopting."
