| September 17, 2011 9:00 PM

ST. MARIES - St. Maries scored with 1 minute, 29 seconds left to pull within one point, but a two-point conversion pass went awry and Bonners Ferry escaped with a 32-31 victory in the Intermoutain League football opener for both teams Friday night.

"This is a tough loss," said St. Maries coach Craig Tefft, whose team scored five touchdowns to Bonners' four. "We were there; we couldn't stop them on their two-point conversions, and we couldn't convert our two-point conversions. It was a heartbreaking loss, but we'll regroup."

Sophomore Luke Feasline completed 23 of 38 passes for 443 yards and five touchdowns for St. Maries (0-4). Jordan Stapleton, who missed the first three games because of mononucleosis, caught 10 passes for 192 yards and four TDs. Ashton Stephenson, who missed the past two games following a concussion, caught a TD pass.

Reed Bennett rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries for Bonners Ferry (1-3).

St. Maries travels to Orofino on Friday.

SILVERTON - Casey McKinnon threw three touchdown passes and rushed for three more as the host Miners, ranked fourth in 1A Division I, pulled away from the Knights in a key North Star League game at Sather Field.

Tyler Beard caught four TD passes for Wallace (3-0, 3-0 NSL) and Michael Carey made two interceptions in the end zone.

Lakeside (3-1, 3-1) pulled within 36-24 on Garth Dole's 82-yard kickoff return with 4:35 left in the first half, but Wallace scored two minutes later, then scored four unanswered touchdowns in the second half, ending the game with 10:03 remaining in the fourth quarter on the 45-point rule.

"They really wore us down tonight," Lakeside coach Ron Miller said. "Our guys are outweighed by about 20 pounds at each position. We just were out-strengthened. We had no more front line, and we had to keep guys on the field that were tired. We were playing our 2s a lot."

Lakeside is idle next week, then plays host to Clark Fork on Sept. 30.

Daniel Whipple rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries for Kootenai (1-3, 1-2 NSL).

"We executed on offense against a Mullan team that is really young and showed a lot of fight," Kootenai coach Doug Napierala said. "Youth and experience is always a struggle for teams. We struggled a lot on defense today. It was tough to match up with their quick slants."
