Running against many bigger schools, the 3A Timberlake Tiger girls placed second out of 22 full teams at the Silverwood Coaster Cross cross country meet Saturday at Silverwood Theme Park.

Ashly George placed fourth overall in 19 minutes, 19 seconds for Timberlake, which came in just three points behind champion Cheney. Teammates Brooke Nowlan and Natalie Herring finished 16th and 17th, respectively.

"They had set a goal this week to win the Silverwood meet," Timberlake coach Shawn Lawler said. "We discussed how great it would be if a school our size could beat all the big schools. We talked about how some of the schools have a student body larger than the population of Spirit Lake. How fortunate we should feel that our girls could even be battling for the top spot."

Sanne Holland of Cheney won by six seconds in 18:59.

The two-loop course underwent some minor changes from last year. Runners started on the grass, looped into the woods and also ran on pavement on the airstrip.

Southern Idaho teams dominated the boys race, with Timberline of Boise winning, Rocky Mountain of Meridian second, Meridian third, Borah of Boise fifth and Capital of Boise sixth. Lake City was eighth.

Micah Krmpotich of Bonners Ferry was fifth in 16:14, and Sam Levora of Sandpoint placed sixth in 16:18. Justin Ross of Rocky Mountain won by 20 seconds in 15:44.

All told, 35 teams registered and slightly more than 1,000 runners competed.
