Susie's Home Kitchen opens
Resort-quality food with everything homemade for blue-collar prices is the promise of Susie's Home Kitchen.
This new restaurant in the former Casa de Oro location at 445 W. Cherry Lane (on Highway 95 across from Elmer's Restaurant) should open this coming week. Owner Susie Reindel previously had the Susie's eatery in Hayden.
Offering breakfast, lunch and dinner, Susie's will have a standard menu with specials daily including chicken-fried meatloaf burgers, homemade soups, and wine and beer. Hours will be 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays. Tablecloths and candles will be added for weekend evenings.
A "homey" decor will surround tables and booths that seat 68 people, said Reindel, who has been in the restaurant business for 30 years. Originally from Golden, Colo., she came to North Idaho in 2000 after looking for the nation's "best place."
With 12 employees, Susie's also offers party platters, full-service catering and take-and-bake meals.
Now and Then opening on Best
An upscale thrift shop is the plan for Now and Then, a 2,400-square-foot resale and gift boutique opening in early November at 1308 Best Ave. (between Auto Shack and Divers West).
The inventory will include quality new and used women's and children's fashions, home decor and furniture. Consignments are welcome. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Owners Debbie Thomas and Robin Seibold came from Central Washington in September.
"Everyone is happy here - in the store, even at the dump," Thomas said. "They take happy pills. There's trees here!"
Snap Fitness expands to Hayden
An always-open Snap Fitness Center will open Tuesday at 231 W. Hayden Ave. (across from Super 1 Foods).
With its members able to use any of 2,000 Snap centers nationwide and in six countries, the place offers several cardio workout options, treadmills, free and circuit weights, personal trainers and nutrition centers. The 8-year-old company's headquarters is in Chanhassen, Minn.
Originally from Lewiston and a U of I graduate, owner Lt. Col. Jeff Spencer retired from 20 years with Air Force space operations and owns five of the other eight Snap centers (including Coeur d'Alene) in the region. Jeff, the 2011 Franchisee of the Year award-winner, is joined by Bret Spencer and Jake Smith, graduates of LCSC and St. Cloud State respectively.

Lake City Shoe moves south
This guy somehow restored my well-worn favorite shoes and tightened my "cowboy" belt when my tummy shrunk. Now Wayne Johnson is moving Lake City Shoe Repair and North Idaho Pedorthic Service to 3115 Government Way (in the mini-mall across from Aaron's Rentals).
Not only does he repair any leather items (purses, hats, coats, suitcases, tents), he sells special extra-depth and pain-relief shoes, laces, polish and shoe-fitting aids. Moving from 6055 Government Way, the new shop offers him more space for display and fitting.
