EAGLE - The blue train reached its final destination on Saturday as the Coeur d'Alene boys won their first state 5A championship in school history. Meanwhile, the Timberlake girls won their third straight 3A championship at the state cross country championships Saturday at Eagle Island State Park.

"This is outstanding," Coeur d'Alene coach Cathy Compton said. “The boys wanted this really bad and did it all the right ways this season. They definitely worked as a team today and they wanted this to be the year.”

Coeur d’Alene placed all five of its runners in the top 20, led by Cody Curtis, who finished third in 16 minutes, 22.94 seconds. Michael Dunton was seventh in 16:37.81, Andrew Regan 12th in 16:56.38, Ben Woolley 13th in 16:56.58 and Kenny Colbert 20th in 17:02.49 for Coeur d’Alene.

“Coming off the third-place trophy last year, the guys all came into practice this year in great shape,” Compton said. “They learned to run tired and our team unity was amazing. They worked hard, put their noses to the grindstone and that’s what it takes to be a champion.”

In the 3A race, Timberlake edged Sugar-Salem by 10 points for its third straight girls title.

“It was a fantastic day for our girls,” Timberlake coach Shawn Lawler said. “They went out and got into the race from the start and finished well and ran a very intelligent race today.”

Timberlake had five runners earn medals by finishing in the top 20.

In the 2A boys meet, Coeur d’Alene Charter finished third, led by sophomore Leif Fredericks, who finished fourth in 17:01.40.

5A: It marks the Vikings’ first boys title since the first cross country meet was held in 1968.

“This is what we’ve wanted for the last three years,” said Curtis, a senior. “I couldn’t have asked for more from a great team this year.”

Michael Dunton finished 7th after placing 32nd in last year’s event in Soda Springs.

“I felt more prepared for this race than last year,” said Dunton, a junior. “I just felt better than any other race this year. I’m looking forward to coming back and doing the same.”

Coeur d’Alene’s girls finished second, four points behind champion Boise with 66 points.

“It has been a long run since we’ve had a girls trophy at state,” said Compton, who last brought back a state title in 2004. “It was an outstanding group effort.”

Coeur d’Alene had no seniors on this year’s team.

“This is a young team,” Compton said. “We’ve strived for excellence all year.”

Freshman Josie Brown finished third in 19:04.87 for Coeur d’Alene.

“She had some girls coming up on her and she outkicked them when she needed to,” Compton said. “She proved today that she’ll only get better and better.”

“It felt really good,” said Brown of the race. “I felt happy with where I was at. It was tough and definitely a battle, but I kept my head in it. I’m definitely happy with my team and looking forward to next year. We worked hard to get here and we’re looking forward to next year.”

4A: Sam Levora of Sandpoint was the top local finisher, coming in fifth in 16:42.35.

3A: Junior Ashly George finished third in 19:34.1 for Timberlake.

“We started out pretty hard for the first half-mile,” said George, who was third two years ago and second last year. “I kept looking at Brooke (Nowlan) and Natalie (Herring) and tried to hang on with the front of the pack for as long as I could.”

Alice Keller of Salmon won the race for 18:58.26.

“I was a little disappointed because I wanted to get second or win,” George said. “I’m a little bummed out, but this is nothing to be ashamed of.”

Nowlan, a senior, finished eighth.

“It’s pretty amazing,” said Nowlan of the third straight team championship. “It has been our goal all year and we went out and just did it today. It feels amazing.”

Dominique Vanderwilt finished 18th for Timberlake.

“It felt really good,” Vanderwilt said. “It hurt a little to get it, but in the end, it felt really good.”

Timberlake’s boys finished seventh.

2A: The Charter boys were never ranked in the top six all season by idahoxc.com, but coach Lewis Watkins was confident.

“We had a remarkable day,” he said. “We knew that we had a strong enough team to make a podium finish, but the rest of the state must not have thought that way.

Watkins said Fredericks “just ran a stupendous race” and set the tone for the team. David Conway was the next Charter finisher, coming in 24th.

Charter’s third-place finished match the school’s best at state; Charter’s boys and girls were third in 2007. Fredericks’ finish matched the best individual finish; Sadie Iott was fourth in ’07.
