Lakeside upends Wallace, advances to state play-in match

WALLACE - Francine Hendrickx had 28 digs as the Lakeside Knights defeated the Wallace Miners 25-21, 25-20, 25-22 in a 1A Division I District 1 championship match at Wallace High.

"We just came out playing well and kept it up all three games," Lakeside coach Jan Mitchell said.

Lakeside (12-7) will face the third-place team out of District 3 in a play-in match to the state 1A Division I tournament on Saturday in Grangeville.

Maria Garcia had 27 digs, Ruth Haynes eight kills, Michelle Whaley 30 assists and Christina Nilson six aces for Lakeside.

Sarah Snyder had five kills, Amanda Pehan three blocks and Mackenzie Dire nine digs for Wallace in the loser-out match.

"We were beat in three games at Lakeside earlier this season, but to be honest I thought we definitely had a favorable matchup," Wallace coach Elisa Rose said. "It all comes down to mistakes, and today we made hitting errors, then we made some more hitting errors."

COEUR d'ALENE - Jennifer Schuman had 19 kills as the Timberwolves defeated the Hawks 24-26, 25-16, 25-4, 25-12 on senior night at Lake City High.

Camille Rounds had 22 assists and five aces, Mackenzie Brown seven digs and Carly Farrell five blocks for Lake City (17-5), which hosts Coeur d'Alene on Thursday in the opening match of the 5A Region 1 tournament at 7 p.m.

Lakeland (5-24) will face Moscow in the opening round of the 4A Region 1 tournament on Saturday in Sandpoint at 10 a.m.

Pullman Christian d. N.I. Christian

PULLMAN - Courtney Lawson had 12 digs and four aces, but the Royals fell to the Eagles 20-25, 26-24, 20-25, 25-20, 15-9 in a Mountain Christian League match.

Kana Shanley had seven kills and four aces and Hannah McCauley 11 assists and four blocks for North Idaho Christian (6-10, 4-8 MCL), which travels to Logos of Moscow on Thursday.

5A Region 1

That tournament begins Thursday, with No. 1 seed Lake City (17-5) hosting No. 4 Coeur d'Alene (10-14), and No. 2 Post Falls (28-6) hosting No. 3 Lewiston (13-9).

Both begin at 7 p.m.

The double-elimination tournament continues Saturday at Lake City. The championship match is scheduled for 2 p.m., followed by the second-place match at 4.

The top two teams advance to state Oct. 28-29 at either Coeur d'Alene, Lake City or Post Falls High - depending on which teams qualify for state, as schools can't host a state volleyball tournament that their team is playing in.
