Timberlake advances to state 3A tournament

RATHDRUM - Mercades McComb scored from 30 yards out to give the third-seeded Timberlake Tigers the lead for good in a 2-1 win over the second-seeded Bonners Ferry Badgers in the 3A District 1 tournament at the Rotary Soccer Complex to advance to the state 3A tournament at Vallivue High in Caldwell, starting on Thursday.

"We have always matched up well against Bonners Ferry," Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. "Tonight's game could have gone either way. We're very equally matched and just found a way to score the go-ahead goal."

Samantha Simmons scored on a penalty kick in the third minute for Timberlake (7-7-2), which faces Kellogg (9-0-2) today for state tournament seeding in the district championship match at 11 a.m.

Kellogg advanced to its first state tournament in school history with a 1-0 win over Orofino in a semifinal match earlier on Friday.

Orofino beat Priest River 4-0 in a loser-out game earlier on Friday.

RATHDRUM - Cameron Nall received a pass from Thomas Cook and beat the goalie one-on-one for a goal in the 40th minute that lifted St. Maries past Orofino in the semifinals of the 3A District 1 tournament.

"I thought we played well, especially in the first half," St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said. "Our defense played well, our midfield played well, we were able to score and keep them out."

Sophomore Cody Posselt made eight saves for St. Maries (2-15), which plays Bonners Ferry in the championship game 11 a.m. today at Lakeland High.

First half - SM, Cameron Nall (Thomas Cook), 40:00. Second half - No scoring.

Charter's Fredericks wins

COEUR d'ALENE - Coeur d'Alene Charter's Leif Fredericks won the boys race by 27 seconds in The Great Pumpkin Invitational at Ramsey Park.

Fredericks finished in 17 minutes, 33 seconds as the Panthers finished with four in the top 10 of the five-team race.

Steffie Pavey of Priest River won the girls race in 20:38.
