Lakeland boys beat Sandpoint for first time in school history

| October 2, 2011 9:00 PM

RATHDRUM - Colton Grytness scored on an assist from Alex Opland in the 25th minute and the Lakeland Hawks defeated the Sandpoint Bulldogs 1-0 in a 4A Inland Empire League match Saturday at Corbit Field.

It was Lakeland's first win over Sandpoint since the Hawks started their program 15 years ago, Hawks coach Nick Haynes said.

"It was an intense game," Haynes said. "We were pretty jacked up for it. It was a physical game and Colton got one for us. It was a really good game."

Sandpoint (7-6-1, 3-1 5A IEL) will be the top seed to the 4A Region I tournament and on Oct. 13 will host the winner of the Oct. 11 match between Lakeland (8-4-3, 1-2-1) and Moscow (5-6-1, 1-2-1) for a berth to the state tournament. Because Moscow went 1-0-1 against Lakeland in their two meetings, Moscow earned the No. 2 seed.

"They're a good team," said Haynes of Sandpoint. "They're a physical team and it was a good matchup. They've got some good players there."

Lakeland hosts Northwest Christian on Thursday at the Rotary Soccer Complex.

LEWISTON - Timmy Mueller scored on a penalty kick in the 75th minute as the Trojans defeated the Bengals in a 5A Inland Empire League match, clinching the league title and the top seed to the Region I tournament.

"We went down there shorthanded because we had a number of kids doing the SATs," Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson said. "Then Matt Howard rolled his ankle during warmups and we had to make some major adjustments. It was just one of those days. It's hard to play in Lewiston sometimes, but we found a way to win in adversity."

Lucas Whitten tied the match at 1-1 on an unassisted goal for Post Falls (13-0-1, 5-0 5A IEL), which hosts St. George's on Tuesday.

Lucas Zirotti had two assists for Lake City (7-5-1), which hosts Sandpoint on Wednesday.

"Lucas was serving up some really good passes in the first half," Beadell said. "I thought we played really well in the second half. It's been a tough week for us, but I was happy with how we bounced back. We were pretty beat up, but it was a complete team effort."

RATHDRUM - Cambrae Steinke gave the Hawks the lead in the 74th minute, but Meghan Pagano scored the equalizer for the Bulldogs four minutes later in the 4A Inland Empire League game at Corbit Field.

Steinke came into the game after striker Darby Murray suffered an arm injury. A minute later, she split two defenders and scored from 9 yards out.

Pagano scored from right in front of the goal when she poked in a teammate's shot that had bounded off Lakeland keeper Angelique Wetherelt, who had "saved our tail ends" throughout the game, Lakeland coach Mario Maddy said.

"It was a great game, and it'll be an interesting district tournament," he added.

No. 3 seed Lakeland (3-5-4, 0-2-2 4A IEL) will travel to No. 2 Sandpoint (3-8-5, 1-0-3) on Oct. 10 in the first round of the 4A Region 1 tournament. The winner plays at No. 1 Moscow on Oct. 12 for the region's lone berth to state.
