MEALS: 1 million served

I am a World War II veteran and my wife is a Gold Star wife, having lost her first husband in Korea. We partook of Applebee's Veterans Day celebration last Friday and noted the article in the Press about the one million thank-you meals they served on Veterans Day.

We want to personally express our thanks and appreciation to Applebee's corporate group and particularly to the local management and staff for this patriotic program. Not only was the food outstanding, the staff was exceptional in all respects and we are very grateful.

Sincerely,

RALPH and JEAN HALLOCK

PURPLE RIDE: Event a success

I would like to take a moment to sincerely thank all of our sponsors and participants for making our second annual Spoke-d'Alene Purple Ride a success.

The Inland Northwest Affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network was able to host more than 225 participants for a scenic ride along the Centennial Trail followed by a fun picnic at Riverstone Park, with great food by Fedora and Capone's, beverages by Pepsi, and music by South of Rock.

Thank you to KHQ and the Coeur d'Alene Press for covering the event, as well as our sponsors, Hecla Mining, Comcast, Salesforce.com Foundation, Kalispel Tribe, Northern Quest Casino, Shoshone Medical Center, Snap Fitness, AMR, Inlander, Leisure Care Retirement Communities and the Coeur d'Alene Fire Department. Thank you also to The Party's Here for the balloon arch.

Many thanks as well to all those who donated raffle items, including Alpine Boat and Ski Shop, Blue Lizard, Bumblebar, Coeur d'Alene Cellars, The Coeur d'Alene Resort, Coeur d'Alene Casino, Centennial Distributing, Coldwater Creek, Columbia Tractor, Cool Water Bikes, Customs by Jim, Gem Berry, Image Maker Photo, the Kroc Center, Larson's Department Store, Laughing Dog Brewing, Lawrence's, Lather Salon, Litehouse, Mattressland, Merwin's True Value, Mountain Gear Retail Store, North Division Bicycle Shop, Pend Oreille Winery, Ponderay Design Center, Ponderay Garden Center, Post Falls Family Dental, REI, Renegade Classics, Sandpoint Sports, Sandpoint Super Drug, Schweitzer Mountain Resort, Scrappy Quilters of Coeur d'Alene, Seattle Seahawks, Sharon's Hallmark, Silverwood, the Spokane Indians, Spoke 'n Sport, Sports Plus, Stephanie Hill LMP, Steve's on Cannon, Swinging Doors Restaurant, The Bike Hub, Tom Addis Ford and Vintage V-Twin.

Last but certainly not least, thanks to photographers Don Sausser and Cynthia Rozyla for so beautifully capturing this event in pictures, and to Durham School Services for providing bus service back to Spokane.

With their support, we were able to raise more than $37,000 for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, a national organization fighting pancreatic cancer in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach and advocacy for a cure. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States, with just 6 percent of patients surviving more than five years. Despite these terrifying statistics the National Cancer Institute (NCI) only allocates 2 percent of its research funding to pancreatic cancer.

It is through events like Spoke d'Alene Purple Ride that we can make a difference in this fight. Thank you again to all of those involved, and we look forward to our Spoke-d'Alene Purple Ride next year.

Sincerely,

TERRI LYNN CAPOZZO

VETERANS: A day of honor

On Nov. 11, we celebrated Veterans Day in a community-wide event hosted by Christ the King Lutheran Church.

As our Pastor Robert Sundquist stated, "We come together to pay tribute to men and women who have worn the uniform of the United States armed forces. We give thanks to the patriots who have risked their lives to preserve our nation, the families who support them and those heroes who are no longer with us."

During the celebration, the Washington Air National Guard Honor Guard presented our U.S. and Idaho state flags and the Patriot Guard Riders respectfully stood guard at the entry of the church with their POW, MIA, military and American flags.

We are thankful to all who attended and participated, as the entire program and its message celebrated the freedoms that make this nation great. Thank you, veterans!
