PAY: Matter of perspective

| November 9, 2011 9:00 PM

Here's what most of our politicians are paid: $174,000; $193,400 if you are a majority or minority leader; $223,500 if you are the speaker of the house. At first thought, it sounds like a lot of money, but let's consider what our money would buy us in the private sector.

Let's look at a local company; let's say "Avista." Avista's CEO, after adding salary, stock options and other compensations, receives $3,245,967. Believe it or not, this is typical of most large corporations. What we pay our elected representatives would not buy even a middle level corporate manager. So why should we expect these people to preform like seasoned executives? They're not. Yes, there are always exceptions, but very few. A business, lacking qualified applicants, would ultimately offer more compensation to attract the right people. How have we, the American people, let ourselves become resentful of what we pay (in dollars) for proper leadership?

Sadly, I foresee no changes anytime soon. Election time is around the corner; once again. More childish name calling, slanderous statements, lies and anything goes. Until we are willing to make an investment in our leadership we will have to accept the mentality that we feel is affordable. There is no party neither democratic, republican, tea or even beer party that will wave a magic wand and bring common sense to Washington. Most people will not agree but it's time to raise the bar. Give the bums a raise. We need to attract the right people.
