Specialized Needs Recreation holds volunteer training June 8

| May 31, 2011 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - Specialized Needs Recreation will hold a volunteer training session on Wednesday, June 8, from 5-8 p.m. at the SNR facility, 1323 Sherman Ave., Suite E.

Dinner will be provided as well as the information needed to become a successful volunteer.

The award-winning program has learned that a vital program asset is its volunteers, who are critical to the program because there are three paid staff members serving 60 campers during numerous activities.

SNR Director Angie Goucher will provide the three-hour class training.

The rest will be "on-the-job training throughout the summer."

One important topic will be learning about the kids in the day camp, their disabilities, and their needs, first aid procedures, emergency plans, policy and procedures.

"We will also be going over all that is expected of an SNR volunteer," Goucher said, "and the rules that all volunteers need to follow, as well as the expectations and responsibilities of a volunteer."

SNR is a nonprofit that provides recreational opportunities for youth and adults who have developmental disabilities.

Trainees will also learn about Camp All-Stars, how it runs, the safety of campers and how to be a team player.

SNR has more than 50 volunteers.
