Viks claim consolation title

| May 22, 2011 9:00 PM

BOISE - Though the trophy they brought home wasn't the one they went down there to get, the Coeur d'Alene Vikings closed their season in style, routing Highland 13-4 on Saturday in the consolation championship game of the state 5A baseball tournament at Memorial Stadium.

Danny Lockhert and Kaleb DeHaas each went 2 for 4 with three RBIs for Coeur d'Alene (25-2). Andrew Baracco went 2 for 4 and drove in two runs. Highland (20-7) pitchers walked five and hit seven. Drew Turbin was hit twice, walked twice, hit a double (extending his school single-season record to 16), and drove in three runs.

"It was just nice to see the kids go out on a high note in the last game of the season," said Vikings coach Nick Rook, whose squad lost 4-3 to Mountain View of Meridian in the first round on Thursday night, then clobbered Centennial 17-4 on Friday. "This is a phenomenal group of kids that we're truly blessed to coach. Obviously the kids are disappointed, but at the same time it was a great year."

Coeur d'Alene's 25-2 record is the school's best ever by winning percentage, and the Vikings' 25 wins matches the total of the 2001 squad.

"We set (numerous) records," Rook said. "It was a pretty spectacular year. The kids did not play a bad inning (at state), unfortunately we just got beat on the first night."

BOISE - Jake Harper hit an RBI single with one out in the seventh inning as the Bees defeated the Hawks in the third-place game of the state 4A baseball tournament at Bishop Kelly High.

Lakeland, which trailed 8-5 entering the sixth inning, exploded for eight runs, keyed by a three-run home run by Cody Vandever, who also had a three-run homer in the first inning.

"Basically, we came out hitting in the sixth inning," Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. "They brought in their second guy and he walked the first two he faced and Cody hit the home run."

Following two more walks, Tyler Burnett delivered a two-run double to put Lakeland in the lead.

"We scored on a couple passed balls and went ahead 13-8," Bradbury said. "Before that, the kids were getting kind of down and kind of flat. That was a huge inning for us."

Colben McGuire hit a two-run triple to tie the game with one out in the seventh for Bonneville.

"The kids took the loss pretty hard," Bradbury said. "The kids played hard and we were in it with every team we played. I didn't think we were outplayed in any games. We gave up a lot of runs, but thought we were just as good as every team down here."

Lakeland finished 14-14.
