SOLDIERS: Give them full support

| May 15, 2011 10:00 PM

I recently had the privilege to spend a few days at the U.S. Marine Corps base, at Camp Pendleton, in southern California. For anyone who has served in the military, or has a relative serving, you will understand what great pride one experiences seeing the young men who train to protect the USA, and risk all in doing so. My son-in-law, Corporal Kevin Smidt from Coeur d'Alene, is one of those fine young men, who just safely returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

With the seeming lack of support in our current administration, and the "Commander-In-Chief" of the Armed Forces, recently having difficulty pronouncing the word "Corps," it was refreshing and inspiring to see the patriotism and dedication that our troops exhibit, ooh rah!

North Idaho has traditionally supported our troops and I hope will always continue to do so. I challenge all to remember that these men in uniform work for relatively small compensation, and occasionally, when you see one on leave, if you are able, "pick up the tab" if they are buying a meal, etc. They do appreciate the support financially, and for what they have trained, and dedicated themselves to accomplish.
