Priest River beats Timberlake to join Badgers at state

SPIRIT LAKE - For the first nine innings in the 3A District 1 tournament championship game, the traffic around the bases was at a near standstill.

In the 10th, the Bonners Ferry Badgers made the most of their chances as they scored nine runs in the inning to defeat the top-seeded Timberlake Tigers 10-1 to advance to the state 3A tournament starting Thursday at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore.

“Just like every game in the Intermountain League, it was close and wasn’t easy,” Bonners Ferry coach Tom Turpin said. “It was a great game to watch and great game to coach. It just looked like Timberlake ran out of pitching.”

Josiah Owinyo hit a three-run double in the 10th for Bonners Ferry (10-13), which faces Buhl in the opening round of the state tournament at noon on Thursday.

J.D. Page struck out 12 in nine innings for Timberlake, then had to come out because of high school rules limiting pitchers to nine innings in one start.

Later, Eric Holbrook struck out nine for Priest River as the Spartans defeated Timberlake 6-2 to earn the second seed to state.

“I thought we came to play today,” Priest River coach Mark Schultz said. “We played as a team and our guys never quit, especially after losing to Bonners Ferry yesterday. I’m proud of what this group has accomplished this year.”

Jordan Munar hit a two-run single in the five-run fourth inning for Priest River (12-10), which opens with Fruitland on Thursday.

Tyler Shaffer had three hits for Timberlake, which finished 11-9.

Earlier, Tyson Barber hit a two-run single in the third inning as Priest River eliminated Kellogg 4-0 in a loser-out game.
