District 1 all-star track and field meet Viks' Struble shines in hurdles

POST FALLS - Coeur d'Alene junior Morgan Struble set a meet record in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles as the best of the best hit the track on Thursday afternoon at the annual District I All-Star Championships at Post Falls High.

Struble finished in 44.10 seconds, breaking the record of 45.56 set by Lakeland's Camille Reynolds in 2009. Her time of 15.10 in the 100 hurdles was four-tenths of a second ahead of the record set by Darcy Collins of Kootenai in 2006, but due to wind conditions, another .24 seconds was added to her time to make up the difference, so she didn't get that record.

"I've been working all year on being faster between the hurdles," said Struble of her record-breaking finish. "The 300 is a harder race than the 100 hurdles, but I've been working on improving in the 300 since I was a freshman."

Struble transferred from Big Sky High in Missoula this year.

"The competition is about the same here as in Montana," Struble said. "Since I've proved myself here, I'm really looking forward to the state meet."

The meet attracted athletes with the top marks and times from District 1 this year. No team scores were kept.

Lakeland senior Latecia Howell won in the 100, 200, long jump and triple jump.

"Latecia had an exceptional day today," Lakeland coach Lee Libera said.

Coeur d'Alene senior Kinsey Gomez set a meet record in the 1,600 in 5:17.03, improving .76 seconds on her previous record set as a sophomore.

"It's definitely not what I've been running this year," Gomez said. "I'm really excited to gear up for regionals and state. Meets like this are good for team bonding. Our girls are exceptional this year, and it makes me want to compete just as hard for them."

Matt Wardell threw 57 feet in the shot put and Austin Funk threw 160 feet, 7 inches in the discus to win their respective events for Post Falls.

"Austin threw really well today," Post Falls coach Wade Quesnell said. "He works hard and is on track to do well. Hopefully he's got some more in him next week. We had a really good day in the throws."

Lake City's boys team won the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays and had wins by Jordan Porto (200), Nick Gosselin (400) and Kaleb Mitchell (300 hurdles).

"Our relay teams have been coming along nicely," Lake City coach Kelly Reed said.

Brian Cronnelly won the 110 hurdles in 15.80 seconds and Zack Ward finished second in the 300 hurdles for Timberlake.

“Both Brian (Cronnelly) and Zack (Ward) had good days for us and we had a lot of good marks,” Timberlake coach Brian Kluss said. “It was nice to get out and see some good competition right before the district meet.”

Kellogg senior Marah Ashcraft won the high jump at 5-2.

“It’s a season PR for her,” Kellogg coach Steve Mills said. “She’s been hitting that all year and had 5-4, but nicked the bar with her calf. I told her to quit chasing the PR, relax and let the jumps happen. Today, she seemed to have the right mental aspect.”
