BASEBALL

SPIRIT LAKE - Tyler Shaffer scored the winning run in the opener and J.D. Page pitched a two-hit shutout in the nightcap as the Timberlake Tigers swept the first-place Bonners Ferry Badgers 4-3 and 7-0 to move atop the Intermountain League baseball standings.

"It was a great day for some good baseball," Timberlake coach Bill Rider said. "It was two really good games. We played well, and I thought Bonners played well today."

In the 10th inning of the opener, Shaffer led off with a single, advanced to second on a throwing error on the play, and moved up to third on a passed ball. He scored the winning run on a balk by the Badgers' pitcher.

"I don't care how we got it - a league win's a league win," Rider said.

Shaffer went 2 for 4 and scored twice for Timberlake (9-6, 6-2 IML). He also struck out 11 in nine innings before having to leave the mound because IHSAA rules say a starter can only pitch nine innings.

Austin Allen's two-run single put Timberlake ahead 3-2 in the fourth. Dan Mayzel singled in the tying run for Bonners (5-11, 5-4) in the fifth, then no one scored for either team until the 10th.

Page struck out seven, walked two and hit one in the second game. Casey Rogstad hit a two-run single in the fifth inning, and Johnny Hayden went 2 for 4 with three RBIs for the Tigers.

Timberlake travels to St. Maries on Monday for a doubleheader.
