NIC celebrating American Indian Heritage Week
COEUR d'ALENE - North Idaho College is hosting a variety of events April 4-8 in honor of American Indian Heritage Week. Most events are free. The Inter-Tribal Food Feast April 6 is $6 per plate, and the Inter-Tribal Show, which wraps up the week of events on Friday, April 8, is $5. The public is welcome at all events. Info: 769-3365
Monday, April 4
The weeklong series will kick off with storytelling with Marie Poirier of the Blackfeet Tribe at 10 a.m. in the Edminster Student Union Building (SUB) Driftwood Bay Room.
A dancing exhibition by the Shooting Star Dancers of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe from noon to 1 p.m. in the SUB Plaza.
Lecture: "Coeur d'Alene Tribal History" from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the SUB Driftwood Bay Room.
Tuesday, April 5
A silent auction will be from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the SUB Driftwood Bay Room to benefit the Che'nshish Scholarship.
Art demonstrations will be in the SUB Lake Coeur d'Alene Room, and crafts vendors will be set up in the SUBPlaza.
Basket weaving demonstration from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a quillwork and beading demonstration from 2 to 3 p.m.
Sculpture demonstration, along with painting and graphics, from noon to 4 p.m. in front of the SUB.
Wednesday, April 6
An inter-tribal food feast from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the SUB Windy Bay Lounge.
Hoop dancing, and stick games follow from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Two showings of the film "Two Indians Talking," which was nominated for Best Film at the American Indian Film Festival, will be shown at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. in Molstead Library Todd Hall.
Thursday, April 7
Hands-on craft workshops for all ages from 6 to 8 p.m. in the SUB Lake Coeur d'Alene Room. Free pizza and refreshments will be available.
"Coyote Story Telling with Puppets," from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the SUB Echo Bay Room.
Friday, April 8
Traditional foods of the Coeur d'Alene and Salish tribes from 11 a.m. to noon in the SUB Driftwood Bay Room.
The event finale, an Inter-Tribal Show, featured comedy, dancing and more is 7 to 9 p.m. in Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center.
