CSI hoops players face marijuana charges

Two College of Southern Idaho men's basketball players face marijuana charges and have been suspended from the team for arrests that happened three days after the Golden Eagles defeated Midland 72-64 to win the NJCAA championship in Hutchinson, Kan.

Starting guard Jerrold Brooks and recent transfer Luke Cothron were arrested Tuesday night and arraigned Wednesday in 5th District Court on one count each of misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance.

CSI athletic director Joel Bate announced Wednesday that the players had been suspended for a violation of team rules, but made no other comment.

Brooks, a freshman from Rochester, N.Y., averaged 15.4 points per game for CSI. Cothron, who is from Huntsville, Ala., arrived in Twin Falls this month and enrolled in late-start classes. He originally signed with Auburn, but did not qualify academically.

2 former Blackfoot High athletes sentenced

BLACKFOOT - Two former Blackfoot High School athletes charged with hazing teammates have been sentenced to four days in jail.

KIFI-TV said Nathan Walker and Logan Chidester were sentenced to 180 days in jail Friday, but District Judge Charles Roos suspended all but four days. The 19-year-olds were ordered to report to jail for 48 hours and must serve the remaining two days on their first weekend back from college this spring.

Both must also write a 2,000-word essay on the psychological impact of hazing and bullying and address Blackfoot High sports teams on the same topic.
