Bevacqua sparks LC in opener

BASEBALL

CLARKSTON - Sophomore Mitch Bevacqua drove in four runs and Lake City defeated Sandpoint 11-4 on Friday at the Lewiston tournament at Prior Field in the Timberwolves' season opener.

Bevacqua hit a two-run home run in the second inning and a two-run single in the fifth. Grant Curtis went 3 for 4 and drove in a run for Lake City.

"I really liked the way we swung the bats," Lake City coach Al Bevacqua said. "Our approach at the plate was very consistent; they really worked to be hard outs."

Lake City plays Rocky Mountain today at 10 a.m. and plays at Lewiston at noon to conclude tourney play.

LEWISTON - Senior shortstop Drew Turbin hit a leadoff home run and Danny Lockhert went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored in the opening game of the Vikings' doubleheader sweep of the Patriots at Airport Park.

Colin Comack hit a solo home run for Coeur d'Alene in the first game.

In the second game, Matt Lambert went 2 for 3 with an RBI and stolen base in the Vikings' 11-1 win in six innings.

"We pitched and hit the ball really well at times today," Coeur d'Alene coach Nick Rook said. "It was a good overall team output."

Coeur d'Alene (5-0) which faces Sandpoint today at 10 a.m. and Rocky Mountain at 12:30 p.m. at Airport Park.

LEWISTON - Catcher Shaundee Garrett had three RBIs in the first game and hit a home run in the second as the Bengals defeated the Trojans in the 5A Inland Empire League opener for both teams at Airport Park.

"We had some chances and put the first two runner on and couldn't score a run," Post Falls coach Jack Foster said. "We played like we weren't ready to play in the first game."

Dara Kolar and Michelle Booth had two RBIs apiece in the second game for Post Falls (2-6), which hosts Lakeland on April 5.

"We came back and competed well in the second," Foster said. "The kids battled hard and played hard, but Lewiston hit the ball well in the second game."
