Heaven for chefs
"Toys for the Kitchen" is the theme of Chef's Heaven, now open at 6848 Government Way. The new store offers quality kitchen utensils, pots, cookware, knives and some appliances. Other specialties include Doma and other flavored coffees, many varieties of tea, quality mustards, vinegars and infused oils.
Owners are Dyson and Dodie Rhodes, who joined relatives in North Idaho last year from the Phoenix area. Running Chef's Heaven as a family, he retired from American Express.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 to 5 Saturdays. Phone 635-5613.
Beau Monde Exchange to move
Popular name-brand clothing items for juniors, women, kids, toddlers and men - for the entire family - are offered at Beau Monde Exchange, which is moving next month to 202 Ironwood Center (next to Jamba Juice) from 6055 Government Way. The new space formerly housed the Mattress Outlet, which has combined with its sister store at Neider Avenue and Highway 95.
With Beau Monde, meaning "world of fashion," the inventory stresses mostly casual and seasonal clothes, shoes and accessories. The "exchange' part of the name refers to the buy, sell and trade aspect of the business.
A graduate of Falls Christian Academy, North Idaho College and Northwest University, owner Brooke Miller started the store in the 7-Eleven mini-mall that burned at Fourth and Best five years ago. She previously was a social worker at Children's Village and in Seattle where she got the idea for the store. She has nine employees and a cool kids' play area.
The move to the 3,000-square-foot space is to avoid future construction of Government Way in Dalton Gardens that Miller says will impact access and parking. Beau Monde hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 Sundays. Phone 772-8414 although the number will change with the move.
Apollo Spas moving, expanding
Expanding from 4,000 to 7,700 square feet, Apollo Spas is moving to a new space in the mini mall at 348 W. Bosanko Ave. (off Highway 95) on April 1. The grand opening will be April 15-17.
Starting in the 1960s and with eight stores in the Northwest, Apollo sells and services hot tubs, spas, showers, saunas, walk-in bathtubs and massage chairs. Nick Nance manages three employees with store hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 to 5 Sundays. Phone 769-7300.
The move was brokered by Marshall Clark of Clark Pacific Realty. Watch for news of another business in the same mall next week.
Here's this
week's tidbits:
• A major reconstruction is under way with two businesses in Hayden.
Details next week.
• Macy's has added a clearance store to the left of its main entry in Silver Lake Mall. The space formerly had a military recruiting office. Watch for more mall news as a few of the empty spaces have "coming soon" signs.
• We're still chasing details on new buildings in Riverstone. A reader asked why new buildings are going in when so many "for lease" signs abound.
Maybe it's because banks give loans on places they'd have if the owner defaults rather than a leased space that does the bank no good. Also, constructing a new building hires workmen and buys building products.
• Attending a journalism convention in New York last week, I noticed people are thinner as they run to catch buses and subways rather than sit in cars. I also had my photo taken with 90-year-old White House correspondent Helen Thomas, which was a terrific honor.
