Lumberjacks romp in opener

ST. MARIES - Marlee Masterson went 2 for 3 with a double and a triple and two RBIs, Morgan Cummings went 2 for 3 with four RBIs and the St. Maries Lumberjacks defeated Freeman, Wash., 14-1 in their season opener Friday.
"We were pretty competitive in our initial outing," Lumberjacks coach Todd Bitterman said. "We just got on the field this week for practice so this first game we were pretty aggressive at the plate, and we put two big innings together."
Tia Asbury went the distance for St. Maries, which hosts Potlatch on Tuesday.

HERMISTON, Ore. - Post Falls piled up 24 hits in its first games of the season, but defensive woes hurt the Trojans as they were swept on the road.
“It was our first time on dirt all year, in practice or games, and we looked like it on defense,” Trojans coach Jack Foster said. “But offensively we hit the ball real well.”
Kendal Floch led the Post Falls offense with five hits in the doubleheader, Katie King had four hits and Dera Kolar belted a 3-run homer.
The Trojans continue their road trip today with two games in Richland, Wash.

LEWISTON — Lake City’s Hailey Little advanced to the championship bracket in girls No. 3 singles with a 3-0 record, Hayley Kausen advanced in girls No. 2 singles at 2-1, and Jill Johnson and Dimitri Christo advanced at 2-1 in No. 1 mixed doubles after the first day of the 16-team Lewiston-Clarkston Invitational.
Ronique Padda went 1-2 and is in the girls No. 1 singles consolation bracket, along with the girls No. 1 doubles team of Maggie Heidenrich and Briana Duran, who also went 1-2.
The tournament ends today.
