COEUR d'ALENE - The race is on for trustee positions up for election in the Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls and Lakeland school districts.

Nearly every seat is being contested on area school boards in the May 17 election.

The deadline to file declarations of candidacy was 5 p.m. Friday.

The school trustee positions are four-year terms.

Five candidates are contending for two trustee positions in Coeur d'Alene.

Brandon Austin, Tom Hamilton, and incumbent Stephanie Powers are vying for the seat in Coeur d'Alene's Trustee Zone 2.

Zone 2 encompasses the area north of Dalton Avenue, east of Highway 95 to Honeysuckle, then west to Reed Avenue and north to the district boundary.

There are two candidates, Gregory Rod and Terri Seymour, vying for the seat in Coeur d'Alene's Zone 3.

Bill Hemenway, the Zone 3 incumbent, is not seeking re-election.

District 271's Zone 3 includes the area west of U.S. 95 to Atlas Road, and north of the Spokane River. The zone moves west and north to the district boundaries at the extension of Holmes Road.

Zone maps are available for viewing on the Coeur d'Alene School District's website, www.cdaschools.org

There have been no school trustee elections in Idaho since 2009, the year new comprehensive election consolidation canceled out trustee elections that would have occurred in 2010.

Idaho election law now calls for school board and other non-partisan elections to be held during odd-numbered years only.

Four candidates are contending for two school board seats in Post Falls.

Incumbent Michelle Lippert will be challenged by Robin Moser in Zone 2.

Zone 2 covers central Post Falls, from Ross Point Road west to Greensferry south of Poleline to Mullan Avenue, and west of Greensferry to Idaho Street south of 16th to the Spokane River. The zone's southwestern boundary extends west to Spokane Street south of Mullan Avenue to the Spokane River.

Dave Paul, the incumbent in Zone 3, will run against Bonnie Beaulieu.

Zone 3 covers most of the northern section of Post Falls.

In the Lakeland School District, four candidates are contending for a pair of seats up for election in Zones 1 and 2.

In Zone 3, incumbent Tim Skubitz filed the only declaration of candidacy so there will be no race in this zone.

Kyle Olmstead, the incumbent in Zone 1, will face Bob Weaver.

In Zone 2, incumbent Barbara Puckett is running against John Shaffer.

Zone 1 includes Spirit Lake, Upper Twin Lakes and reaches into Bonner County.
