SPOKANE - Sophomore Casey Stangel struck out eight and retired the last 14 batters she faced as the Lake City Timberwolves defeated the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups 10-0 in five innings in their season opener Thursday.

"I thought it was a good first outing for only being on the dirt two times this year," Lake City coach Laura Tolzmann said. "Offensively, we did really well and Casey nearly had a perfect game in the circle."

Junior Katie Rowe went 3 for 3 with three RBIs, including two solo home runs for Lake City, which travels to Coeur d'Alene on Tuesday.

Stangel also hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning.

COEUR d'ALENE - Senior Jessica Lupinacci drove a two-out pitch into the left field gap to lift the Vikings to a nonleague win over the Titans at Larry Schwenke Field.

"Jessica really showed her senior leadership today," Coeur d'Alene coach Larry Bieber said. "She willed herself into getting that hit. Things like that make it fun to be the coach."

HAYDEN - Ransom Storm and Devon Loy had five strikeouts apiece for the Vikings JV team in a win over the Lumberjacks in the nonleague opener for both schools.

"I thought it was a pretty clean game for both teams considering neither had been outside much," St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. "We just had too many strikeouts and left too many guys on base."
