Spring concert at Kroc April 2-3
The Northwest Sacred Music Chorale will present its spring concert in the Kroc Center theatre at 7 p.m. April 2 and 3 p.m. April 3 and April 10 at The Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes in Spokane.
The first half of the concert will incorporate a variety of music including well-know favorites: Battle Hymn of the Republic, Deep River, and Dry Bones, as well as a special presentation by Hayden Meadows Elementary children's choir, Harmony N Motion.
The second half of the concert will feature Durufle's Requiem, with Organ, Chamber Orchestra and soloists Patricia Blankenship-Mortier, mezzo soprano and Max Mendez, baritone.
Durufle's Requiem, composed in 1947, is a tribute to faith, comfort, and tranquility. The entire work is based on original Gregorian chant melodies as well as contemporary harmonies from the works of Debussy and Ravel.
These melodies appear in vocal and instrumental parts throughout the work. Durufle blends the elements of Gregorian chant, lush Romantic lyricism, and 20th Century harmonies and rhythms into a beautifully-crafted and unified composition, demonstrating a wide range of textures and colors.
The Requiem is loved for its subtlety and restraint which are reflections of Durufle's personality.
Tickets are $10 and $8 for seniors and students for the performances at the Kroc Center. The performance in Spokane is open to the public. Donations will be accepted.

NIC theater student scholarship finalist
North Idaho College theater student Cory Williamson of Coeur d'Alene was a finalist in the recent Irene Ryan Scholarship Auditions offered through the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. More than 200 undergraduate and graduate students from two-year and four-year universities across nine western states competed for the scholarship.
NIC students Loretta Underwood and Jonathan Beitkreutz of Coeur d'Alene and Alix Welter of Pullman, Wash., and their scene partners Cole Durbin and Danni Bain of Coeur d'Alene and Lo Miles from Clark Fork participated in the auditions. Only one school had fewer students at the conference. Of more than 200 students nominated to participate for the prestigious scholarship, Underwood and Williamson made it to the semifinals round of competition and Williamson made it to the top 10 in the finals.
The students' performances in the scholarship auditions resulted in Underwood and Durbin being nominated to audition for the Actors Theatre of Louisville, a well-known theater company that hosts a highly-respected festival of plays. Underwood also auditioned for the Missoula Children's Theatre and was hired to join the company next year.
