Linda Paulina Glader, 94
Linda Paulina Glader, 94, passed away in Coeur d'Alene on Wednesday, March 2, 2011.
Linda was born July 26, 1916, in Alpena, S.D. She was the youngest girl of six girls and two boys born to Jacob and Paulina Herrboldt. The family made their living by farming and trading in the Dakotas and Minnesota. While much of her time was spent working hard alongside the family, she and her sisters still found time for adventures, as well as plenty of misadventures.
Linda was the only child in the large family to graduate from high school. She graduated from Anoka High School and completed Teacher's College at Saint Cloud State, both in Minnesota. She then taught in a one-room rural school in Minnesota. During World War II, Linda worked in an ammunition plant in Minneapolis. After the war, she returned to work as a school teacher.
Linda met her husband, Leslie Glader, and they were married in Osseo, Minn., on July 3, 1942. Leslie then was sent by the Army to the Pacific Theater. After the war, they made their home in Minneapolis. In 1957, they moved to Red Wing, Minn., where they settled on a farm in the country. This was the home where Linda and Leslie raised two sons, Paul and Peter, and where Linda lived for 44 years. Linda enjoyed being outdoors, hiking, bird watching, gardening and cross country skiing. She was best known for her love of flowers, a large multi-acre vegetable garden and her cinnamon rolls.
Linda and Leslie were lifelong members of First Covenant Church of Red Wing and Linda was very involved in the church during her years in Red Wing. In addition, she was also very active in the community. Her activities included volunteering as a teacher, mental health advocacy, American Cancer Society and Red Cross fundraising, as well as serving as an election judge for numerous years.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents (Jacob and Paulina), sisters (Irma, Viola, Lydia, Ernestine, Martha), brother (Adolph), husband (Leslie) and son (Peter).
She is survived by her brother, Herb (Sherrie), son Paul (Debra) and granddaughter Sara.
A spring memorial service is planned in Red Wing.
Memorial contributions can be made to National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI Goodhue County), P.O. Box 300, Red Wing, MN 55066, or a memorial of choice.
