Carol Lucy Comer, 88

Carol Lucy Comer, 88, passed away at Apuche Junction Health Center in Apache Junction, Ariz., on Tuesday, March 15, 2011.

Carol was born in Walker, Minn., on Aug. 16, 1922, to Perry and Lila (Seely) Smith. She graduated from Hackensack High School at the age of 16. Then she obtained her teaching certificate from Dulth Normal School. Carol taught in several rural schools in Minnesota before enlisting into the U.S. Marine Corp., where she met her future husband, Dennis Ervin Comer. They were wed on June 12, 1944, in Cheraw, S.C. They then moved to Mullan in 1945 and later to Kellogg in 1957. Carol taught at Osburn Elementary School for more than 30 years when she retired in 1985.

She enjoyed swimming, painting, watching basketball especially the Phoenix Suns, gardening and attending the Retired Teachers luncheons.

She is survived by her companion, Ray Olthouse; sister Mary Jean Hinkemeyer of Kellogg; sons, Dennis Dee Comer of Needham, Mass., Kurt E. Comer of Rineyville, Ky., Craig W. (Loretta) Comer of Kellogg; daughter Lynette (Gary) Watson of Green River, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Carol is preceded in death by her parents; husband Dennis on Sept. 28, 1994; brother Russell Smith and grandson Brian Comer.

Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 19, 2011, at the English Funeral Chapel, 1133 N. Fourth St., Coeur d'Alene. The graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2011, at Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens, 7315 N. Government Way, Coeur d'Alene. English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene, is in charge of the arrangements.
