Altsuler earns Idaho Counseling Association Certificate of Honor

Jesse Altsuler, a counseling and school psychology major at the University of Idaho, at Coeur d'Alene, recently earned the Idaho Counseling Association's Certificate of Honor for his research on the Idaho Drug Free Youth training program's ability to change peer perceptions about substance abuse.

In his study of 188 participants attending program's substance abuse prevention training, Altsuler identified two significant changes in attitudes. First, participants left the training with a stronger belief that addicts are unable to control their alcohol or drug use. The training also strengthened their belief that substance abuse cannot be justified as a coping mechanism.

The program training is designed to help participating students model drug free life choices for their peers. Peer-led substance abuse prevention efforts like the program often have proven more successful than similar, teacher- or adult-led interventions, Altsuler said.

"Focusing on drug and alcohol prevention amongst youth should be considered as an option," Altsuler wrote. "Peer pressure amongst teens appears to be a driving force among drug and alcohol users. As it becomes more common for those in peer groups to use drugs and alcohol, it becomes more difficult for those group members to resist using drugs and alcohol."
