HAYDEN - Lindsie Scholwinski struck out six batters and had two hits as the Coeur d'Alene Vikings defeated the Shadle Park Highlanders 7-1 in the nonleague opener for both at Finucane Park on Saturday.

The game was moved from Coeur d'Alene High after field conditions were determined to be unplayable on Saturday morning.

"For it being the first day we've been on a field for a complete day, I was pretty pleased," Coeur d'Alene coach Larry Bieber said. "We made a couple of mistakes, but all in all it was a good first day."

Teigan Lockwood ignited a six-run bottom of the fifth inning with a first pitch double and came around to score on a triple by Kyeli Parker. Elli Tindall, Jessica Ball and Randi Spencer also had RBIs for Coeur d'Alene, which hosts Gonzaga Prep on Wednesday.

Lakeland 7-4

LEWISTON - The visiting Hawks pounded out 14 hits in their season opener, but the Bengals scored four runs in the sixth inning of the first game and three in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap to escape with the sweep at Airport Park.

"Defensively we have some cobwebs to clean out because it was our first day on the dirt," said Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua, whose team committed 11 errors on the day. "But that was one of our best days out for a first game with 14 hits; that's a pretty great way to start out."

Ashley Metcalf went 3 for 4 in the first game for Lakeland, with a two-run single in the third inning. Alia Cox and Bekah Kastning each had four hits on the day.

"Pretty remarkable," Bevacqua said. "There's a lot to build from. I'm very happy and impressed with my girls today."
