UI leaders propose 8.4 percent tuition hike

MOSCOW (AP) - University of Idaho officials are proposing to raise tuition and fees by 8.4 percent for in-state students starting in the fall.

The proposed increase still needs approval from the State Board of Education. But the increase translates to a spike of about $450 per semester. Tuition and fees for students enrolled at the Moscow campus this year are $5,400.

The Moscow-Pullman Daily News also reports the university is seeking to raise tuition and fees by 8 percent for out-of-state students, 7.9 percent for law students and 15 percent for graduate students.

UI Director of Planning and Budget Keith Ickes says the increase is a response to another round state funding cuts.

Even with the hike, Ickes says the university still projects a shortfall of about $6 million next year.
