Hayden man dies after being struck by Jeep

| March 2, 2011 8:00 PM

DAVENPORT, Wash. - A 64-year-old Hayden man died after being struck by a vehicle along Highway 2 in the city of Davenport, Wash., on Monday night.

Howard H. Kuenzi was walking at 7:09 p.m. and entered the roadway, according to Washington State Patrol. He was struck by a westbound 2007 Jeep Cherokee driven by Sharon A. Rutter, 66, of Creston, Wash.

Kuenzi died at the scene. Rutter, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured.

As of Tuesday, no charges were filed.

An investigation continues.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved, a WSP press release states.

Trooper Troy Briggs, a WSP spokesman, said on Tuesday he didn't know any details such as the estimated speed the Cherokee was traveling, if Rutter saw Kuenzi, if Kuenzi was in a crosswalk, how well-lit the street was, if there were any witnesses and how much the lack of visibility was a factor.

"The cause of the collision is still under investigation," Briggs said. "The details will be forthcoming. It was night, so visibility may have played a role, but it's unclear to what extent."
