EUGENE, Ore. - Former Post Falls High and Washington State standout Ian Waltz finished fifth in the men's discus at the 2011 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday at Hayward Field, coming up short in a bid to qualify for the world championships later this summer in Daegu, Korea.

Waltz finished with a top throw of 206 feet, 9 inches, which met the "B" qualifying standard. Jarred Rome won the event with a top throw of 209-11 to qualify for the world championships.

Former Idaho thrower Russ Winger finished fourth at 207-11. None of the top five qualifiers met the "A" qualifying standard Thursday, though Winger previously met the "A" standard.

Waltz, a three-time U.S. champion in 2005, '06 and '08, finished sixth last year at the USA Outdoors.

In the 10,000, Galen Rupp won his third straight national title, finishing in 28 minutes, 38.17 seconds, while Shalane Flanagan won in 30:59.97, more than 16 seconds ahead of Kara Goucher, who gave birth nine months ago.

Other winners Thursday were Kibwe Johnson (hammer), Christian Taylor (triple jump), Stephanie Brown-Trafton (discus) and Michelle Carter (shot put).
