Is your home fire smart?

| June 23, 2011 9:00 PM

As the rains dissipate and we approach the dry season, fire becomes a household word in north Idaho. Risk is the downside of living in these lovely woodlands, but we can have it both ways. Homeowners can keep a park-like setting, while reducing fuels and fire risk and satisfying property insurers.

Best of all, it’s free.

FireSmart is Kootenai County’s wildfire mitigation program. One of 23 action steps developed by the Wildlife Urban Interface Task Force to reduce wildfire hazards, the program is funded by county, state, and federal agencies. Run by long-time forestry veteran Larry Isenberg, Fire Smart educates and helps homeowners create a more survivable space.

Step one is to qualify. The program covers “property within the forested, wildland-urban interface.” Once homeowners leave a message for Isenberg at (208) 772-6704, they receive a packet and application to return by mail. Next, an evaluation appointment is set up to develop a work plan and recommendations for qualifying properties.

This is no service-only program; the homeowner commits to his role in fuels reduction, such as keeping areas clear of pine needles, branches, and other debris. FireSmart participant or not, all homeowners are advised to keep clear gutters, areas under patios and decks, roofs, and yards. Other tips include keeping lawns watered; creating fire breaks (clearings and open space) around walkways, shrubs, and trees; and storing wood piles and other flammables at least 50 feet from the house.

Once Isenberg approves a plan, work can begin one of three ways:

1. FireSmart contracts with a FireSmart contractor and pays them directly.

2. The homeowner hires her own contractor and FireSmart reimburses the approved amount.

3. The homeowner does the work and is paid the approved amount.

No payment is made until FireSmart completes an on-site inspection to ensure plan compliance.

My thanks to reader Shirley Thagard for the topic.
