Prairie ousted at state AA tourney; Loggers triumph again at state A

| July 30, 2011 9:00 PM

TWIN FALLS - Derek Tymesen hit a two-run home run in the third inning, but the Prairie Cardinals left 15 runners on base as they fell to the Boise Gems 7-3 in a loser-out game in the state AA American Legion baseball tournament on Friday at Skip Walker Field.

With runners on first and second base and nobody out, Prairie coach Dustin Frank asked Tymesen to bunt. On the first pitch, Tymesen showed bunt, but pulled the bat back and Cardinal Zack Reeder was picked off first. On the next pitch, Tymesen homered.

In the fifth inning, Prairie loaded the bases, but was unable to score as Daniel Mobeck hit a line drive was ruled to have hit Eric Cooper, who was on second, to end the inning.

"We were one clutch hit away," Frank said. "We could have tied the game and it turned into a big turning point. But it comes down to leaving 15 runners on base. We only had one error, and when it's all said and done, we were only one hit away."

Cody Vandever had an RBI single in the fourth for Prairie (25-25), which finished tied for fifth in its first trip to state since 2003.

"It's not the best way to end the season," Frank said. "But I'm proud of the way the kids played. We played three solid games and competed in each game down here. I'm really looking forward to next season."

ONTARIO, Ore. - Zach Osmanski, Sean Sutton and Brett Robbins had two RBIs apiece as the Loggers defeated the Blue Devils in a quarterfinal game in the state A tournament at Treasure Valley Community College.

Sutton also scored two runs for Coeur d'Alene (35-21), which faces Lewis-Clark in the semifinal tonight at 6 PDT.

The Loggers need one more win at state to clinch a berth to regionals in Roseburg, Ore., starting on Aug. 5.

"Mark Nuttleman did a great job on the mound today," Coeur d'Alene coach Tom Barlow said. "Emmett is known for being a hitting team, but Mark was able to keep them off balance and our defense for the most part made plays for him. If we can keep hitting the ball like we've been, we could win the whole thing."
